What Kind of Life Coach has a Panic Attack?

RECENTLY I HAD A PANIC ATTACK.  A SERIOUS ONE.  I THOUGHT I WAS HAVING A STROKE.

I’m sharing this because you need to know that even when we KNOW what we need to do, what we SHOULD be doing and what is the BEST for us…we can still get caught up in the reactiveness of life and get overwhelmed. Even when we are professionally trained in how to overcome and avoid such energies.

I have been making some shifts lately, getting ready to go back to school, a new position as an adjunct teacher at Kirkwood Community, and automating a shit ton of processes inside my business to alleviate daily ankle biter BS. It’s been a lot.  And I have felt like it has been a lot.  I also recognize…

THIS IS ALL AWESOME, LIFE IS PRETTY GOOD RIGHT NOW.

Yet, as I went to push purchase on a tool that would help me do some of that automation… I SEIZED. My vision went dim and started to darken, my chest squeezed, my heart pounded and stuttered, I got lightheaded and nauseous, all the signs and symptoms of a panic attack.  My partner helped me settle in to a chair and I crashed for a few hours.  CRASHED.  That $10 a month purchase tipped me over the edge.

I had a choice: beat myself up and tell myself how weak I was to be reacting like this.  Or take inventory, answer the question: WTF IS GOING ON?

I have a deeply ingrained method in place in my Aligning Priorities Tool) which allowed me to work through this pretty quickly and realize what had been piling on and needed to be shed and what needed to stay so that I can continue to move forward in my life and create and live in the lifestyle I want to create and live in.

MY LIFE DOESN’T SUCK. BUT I NEEDED TO MAKE A CHANGE.

THOUGH THAT FEW HOURS OF SLEEP FELT FUCKING AMAZING.

I HAD TO SHIFT A FEW THINGS:

  1. I committed to revamping my private coaching services and a long overdue price increase for elite level private coaching.
  2. I said no to a few things I was saying yes to energetically, physically and mentally.
  3. I reminded myself that I am in charge of my lifestyle and nobody but me can determine what works and what doesn’t.
  4. I resisted a lot of the things I wanted to shift and then cosmically smacked myself when I realized I was doing that and once again remembered I am human and screw shit up sometimes.
  5. I automated what could be automated and took good stock of what I needed to pull back on in my businesses in order to go forward with everything I want to be going forward with.
  6. I cut myself some slack and I scheduled a day off during what is projected to be a very busy time ahead.

Here is the deal, if you are laying on the couch and your back says, “hey that doesn’t feel good, you need to move.” You move. It’s not a thing you have to struggle with (unless there is an animal or child on you, in which case, all bets are off).

WHEN YOUR SOUL IS UNCOMFORTABLE, IT TALKS TO YOU TOO. Sends you messages through your intuition and opportunities and more.  And we ignore them, because we can.  The discomfort isn’t great enough. And then, the universe grabs you like an errant child and you get a talking to: you get sick, seized with anxiety, whatever.

This isn’t necessary. You don’t have to do this.  I was reminded of this – the signs showed up way before this panic attack; I just ignored them.

IF YOUR SOUL IS FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE, GO WITHIN AND FIND YOUR ANSWERS.
No panic attack needed.

OH, YOU THOUGHT I’D TELL YOU HOW TO GO WITHIN?

NOPE. YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS. GO DO IT.

If you really struggle, follow the link to the tool above.  If you don’t want to do that, join my Facebook Community and try some of the tools there.

Right now, through January 3rd, I am offering a 90 minute session for $97 (a $225 value).  Grab that and let’s figure out the right combination for optimizing where you are.

If none of that sounds good, email me for a consult via my website.

THE CHOICE IS – AS EVER – YOURS.

Don’t Shop Small on Small Business Saturday: Shop Big

I propose an energy shift around Small Business Saturday.

First, let me be clear: I love small business. I even own a couple.

I love it when people choose small businesses for their holiday shopping. It truly supports the economy in meaningful ways. Putting money into a small business owner’s hands to allow them to grow, support their family and contribute. This is a nice sales bump and a great way to take a piece of the holiday shopping pie for many businesses where their communities have embraced it.

What I don’t like is the hashtag #shopsmall

Nor do I like the emphasis on it or the inherent hypocrisy.

Allow me to state my case before you decide I am a small business hater…

  1. The hashtag:  #shopsmall

This hashtag is weak.  It is small and silly and holds limiting energy. Telling people to shop small at small business is offensive to me as a business owner. It feels like keeping small businesses small across the spectrum. I acknowledge this is the very nature of this business, but a small business can be big on energy and profits while still staying small in size…let’s let them get big on profits and energy.

Look at who the primary backer and originator of Small Business Saturday is: a Credit Card Company. A BIG Business who benefits from you whipping out that card to shop small while the businesses pay the fees for you to use that card.

Check out the history here.

How about a fee free, Saturday Credit Card Companies and processors?  If we really want to care about small businesses, don’t charge us a fee for a day, let us take all the money home…just a thought. Our state governments can give us a tax-free weekend for school shopping, it’s not unheard of to consider at least.

I am a believer in the power of intention and the power of words.  When we say, “shop small” and then head out to spend money, we are carrying small energy with us.  Small businesses need bigger energy.  We need more than the $2 sale, we need the $200 sale to stay afloat and thrive.  We need you to consider shopping BIG on small business Saturday (and beyond).

It is fabulous that this idea has spread and become nationally recognized and grown every year.  But what if it wasn’t just a day?

  1. The Emphasis.

The emphasis is silly to me as well.  I recently ran a free series targeting the gratitude posts that crop up about being grateful in November, but aren’t about creating a life habit of gratitude.  I say make gratitude a lifestyle habit. I find this in the same bag: build a habit and practice of shopping small, not just one day of the year.

Don’t be ticked when your favorite glass studio moves because you don’t visit it. Do more than shrug your shoulder when a specialty store closes it doors that you had been “meaning to visit” but never found the time.

I, the small business owner, am here 365 days a year looking to support my family and grow in my abilities to extend new goods and services to you. Not just that Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Small Businesses deserve more than one day of magnanimity. You as a consumer, deserve more. What if your habits of looking in small businesses first helped small business ecosystems to thrive?

  1. The Hypocrisy.

Small Business owners themselves need to also step up.  Small business owners need to also support other small business owners.  Where will you, small business owner, spend your dollars made from small business Saturday?  Will you head to a large grocery store to buy your food, or will you head over to the local store or co-op to share your dollars? Will you restock from the big wholesaler, or work with a small artist to fill your shelves?

Small business owners, we can do better. We can make this more than a Saturday – we can make it a habit and a sustainable practice. By engaging in it ourselves, by acting the way we want others to act.

Am I against Small Business Saturday? No.  But I am more in favor of a shift in all energies toward small business economic growth and health because there is a value shift to support it, not a holiday declared for it.

I propose a new set of hashtags #shopBIGatSmallBusinessALLyearlong #Supportbigatsmallbusinesses #shopsmallbusinessallyear #shopbigatsmallbusinesssaturdayandbeyond

That is my proposition: that we shift our energies from one day a year of investment in small business to a lifestyle commitment to shopping in small businesses.

Am I being a bit idealistic?

I don’t think so, I live this way now.

I am asking you to truly think about the lifestyle you are creating with your financial actions.

Should I stay, or should I go?  Which choice to make? What to do next?

All questions I hope are flowing your brain as much as they flow through mine.

These mean we are challenging the status quo – that we are unwilling to settle for less than we crave.

What questions are flowing through your brain?

One Minute Musing: Challenge What is Possible

I took my Customer Service Professional Class for a tour yesterday to the Toyota Financial Services Offices here in town.  On the second floor was a full wall sized graphic with an incredibly futuristic concept car. One of my students was enraptured by the design, trying to figure out how one would even enter or exit it.  I, on the other hand, was enraptured by the tag line: Challenge What is Possible.

Yes!  Challenge what is possible.

I heard a variant on this years ago at a proposal workshop for a program we were pursuing with the company I worked for: Create the Art of the Possible.

Both are about thinking differently, refusing the status quo and moving beyond expected.

When I heard it years ago I remember feeling fired up – the phrase “the Art of the Possible” sparked something within and I knew there was something there for me.

Inspiration kicks down your door when it feels like it.  Not always because you took a 3-day silent retreat or read the book to end all books.  Sometimes it is a phrase seen or heard in passing.

I have been questioning some things, looking for confirmation and options and choosing forks in my path recently.  Today I have deadlines to make decisions.  I needed the reminder to look beyond expected, normal and safe.

Challenge what is possible.  Beautiful words. How will you challenge what is possible today?

One Minute Musing: Misallocation of f#$ks

Game 2 of the world series seemed to be all about use of resources.  How the Dodgers used their bullpen last night, mattered. In case you missed it, they fell to the Astros in extra innings.  I’m no sports commentator or expert, but they appeared to come on strong early with their pitching resources and then pull that strength a tad early.  I’m guessing there is some review of resource application going on right now.

The obvious analogy for life is all about how we use our resources in daily living.  In my Facebook Group I have been running a free challenge called Free to Focus (on the F#$Ks you WANT to give) which is all about resource allocation.  When you apply your resources to the f#$s you WANT to give, you gain something: time, money, energy or a combination.  The implication is that you do this consciously and correct as needed.

We all make mistakes, this is part of our humanity.

This is how a world series should be: the best of the best working their hardest to take the victory.  This is good sports.  A tied series in game 2 is excellence in action.

I’m not pissed at our coaching staff at the Dodgers.  Not yet anyway.  They made a call, they gave their f#$ks where they thought best, and it didn’t work out. What they do now with that lesson matters.

Just as it does when you make a mistake and misallocate your f#$ks.  What you do next matters.

One Minute Musing: Traditions

The Dodgers, my Dodgers won last night in game 1.  I watched with my son, my brothers in different states watched with their children, just as we had watched with my mom and dad and our parents had watched with theirs and generations of Dodger fans in my family had watched before us. I remember baseball always being a thing in our family.

Rabid fans? No.  Solid fans? Yes.

My son was fascinated at how engaged I was in the game – he typically watched football while I half pay attention while doing something else.  This time, I did nothing but watch and he was intrigued.  I realized I hadn’t passed this tradition on quite like I had wanted.  He didn’t know he needed to root for Blue.  He didn’t know the names of our players or anything about the team.

So, we talked about it and I shared my memories of laying on the floor in my grandparents living room coloring or reading while my Grampa watched the game and alternately cheered and jeered with disgust at the boys in blue.  And how I would watch the games with my parents and we went through a drought time when all we could get was Northern California TV so we had to watch the A’s and Giants and hope for an odd broadcast of a Dodger Game; pre-cable era TV was feast or famine.

Traditions are important when they are important to you. This one is important to me and I think I’ll keep it around a while. Go Blue!

One Minute Musing: The Nature of Wind

Growing up in my mountain town we had these powerful winds that blew through called Mono Winds.  They’d take out the weaker trees, discover which roofs needed new shingles and blow people around as they tried to do just about anything. They could be disruptive and dangerous.

I loved to lay in bed and listen to their rumbling and screaming through the oak and pine trees outside my window, branches scratching at the glass. Their eerie sounds were somehow soothing. It was just nature doing what nature did.

The simplicity of those moments came back to me as I fell asleep to the sound of wind outside my window last night.  A different landscape produces different sounds: a city-scape now instead of a forest and a rolling hills country instead of mountains.  But still, nature did what nature does, and I just got to listen.

We aren’t in charge of everything. Wind will do what it needs to do, and we don’t have to do anything except bear witness.  A reminder, we simply coexist.

One Minute Musing: Weak Links

Over the weekend my son and I traveled to a soccer tournament almost 2 hours away – both days.  4 hours on the road meant lots of time for podcasts.  I chose Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History for our trip and encountered an interesting thread embedded in one where he was talking about college education and endowment funding.

The podcast itself was riveting, but the part that caught my attention the most was about soccer and it being a weak link sport. In other words….the team is only as good as it’s weakest link.  The best player on the team is no use if the other players can’t pass well enough to get him the ball.  The best defense in the world isn’t enough if the goal keeper can’t stop the ball…etc.  He referred to the book “The Numbers Game” by Christopher Anderson and I now have it on hold at the library.  (amazon link)

As a soccer mom and a student of human beings and leadership, this concept fascinates me and I can’t wait to read and learn more. It begged the question…where are the weak links in my world and how can I train them to be better?

Where can you?

One Minute Musing: I Refuse to be Stress’s Bitch

I read an article recently that referred to the Japanese principle of Kaizen.  It inspired the author to take one minute each day to progress with something she wanted.  The article is called, “Overcoming Laziness: The Japanese Principle of Kaizen” by Dondi Leigh.

I was inspired to take action with this as well but wasn’t sure which direction to aim this intention.  Then it smacked me upside the head: my writing.

I get ideas ALL THE TIME and I don’t always follow them because I feel time constrained. So I decided to implement One Minute Musings.   Little bites of reality as I see them, lessons to learn or things I need to share with the world.

I am sure some of these will become bigger articles, but One Minute Musings is exactly what I need “write” now (haha I love my own jokes!)

So here is number one, I woke up with this today….

My neck aches, my back groans. My hips feel rusty!  Seriously, I am only 42 and I feel like I imagine an 80-year-old without an ounce of yoga under her belt would feel.

It’s time to let go of some stress.  I have been going, going, going and I’m going to take my own advice and stop – relax and be present.  Enjoy all the things I have going on and fuck the rest.

Stress sucks and I refuse to become her bitch again.

Join my Facebook Group to see these daily!

Life, Focus, Power

THE POWER I GAINED LIVING A FOCUSED LIFE WAS NOT WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE

More than anything, I realized that I was giving a f#$k about a lot of things I really didn’t need to be GAF about.

Things like:

  • What other people wanted me to do
  • How I should fit in
  • How everyone else was measuring success

PRIOR TO THAT I MOSTLY I GAVE AF ABOUT THINGS THAT DIDN’T MAKE ME HAPPY – AND IT SHOWED:

  • I wasn’t healthy, stress ate me up and I bitched about more than I celebrated.
  • My answer to how are you was always “busy” (which isn’t an answer it’s a deflection to avoid revealing what’s really up in your life)
  • I kept thinking there was more to life than I was seeing…and I wanted to figure it out.

As I developed my own prioritization process which I now teach my clients and see them blossom with, I realized I was allocating F#$ks to things that drained me, not empowered me and that the power I would gain was simplicity – the ability to say yes to the things I aligned with and let the rest go.

FINALLY, I COULD BE FREE TO FOCUS ON WHAT I WANTED TO GAF ABOUT

Which is what inspired me to run a FREE CHALLENGE called FREE TO FOCUS in my Facebook group and provide deeper good stuff in a supporting email series.

FREE TO FOCUS IS ABOUT YOU FOCUSING ON WHAT YOU WANT TO GAF ABOUT
